What is a UKiBA?

The UKiBA (UK Intermediate Behaviour Analyst) is an intermediate-level certification in behaviour analysis and is the second-highest level of certification offered by the UK-SBA. Practitioners with a UKiBA(cert) have the following:

UKiBA certification reflects the level of formal training completed in behaviour analysis or positive behaviour support. The certification does not indicate a specific organisational role or level of responsibility. Individuals with this qualification may work in a variety of positions, ranging from frontline staff to heads of service.

All approved UKiBAs appear on the UK-SBA searchable register. UKiBAs who work in Health and Social Care are awarded the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) Quality Mark.

UKiBAs are qualified behaviour analysts who have agreed to abide by the UK-SBA Code of Ethical and Professional Conduct and the Complaints Procedure. This is a mandatory condition of registration and demonstrates a commitment to best practice and to protecting those in receipt of behaviour analytic services. UKiBAs who breach the UK-SBA Code of Ethical and Professional Conduct can be subject to complaints which, if upheld, may result in sanctions or removal from the register.

All UKBA(cert)s must also evidence they hold safety to practice items.  These items are as follows:

  • Liability insurance
  • A criminal records disclosure
  • Safeguarding training

What can a UKiBA do?

The UKiBA indicates that a practitioner has met the minimum academic and competence standards for the supervised practise of behaviour analysis in the UK. The UKiBA certification and the PSA registration are only valid for work undertaken in the UK.

A UKiBA can design and implement behaviour analytic services under the clinical supervision of a UKBA(cert). They will work in collaboration with the recipients of their services and other stakeholders to design, implement, and monitor behavioural supports and interventions. They may work as part of a multidisciplinary team or as an independent practitioner.

UKiBAs must receive regular clinical supervision from a full UKBA(cert). The minimum amount of supervision is dependent on the number of hours per month they work in their UKiBA-related role:

  • More than 80 hours per month – a minimum of 2 hours of supervision per month, in at least two sessions, and at least one week apart.
  • Fewer than 80 hours per month – a minimum of 1.5 hours of supervision with a minimum of one session per month.
