What is the UK-SBA Register?

The UK-SBA is committed to protecting the public.  The Register provides reassurance to clients, employers and the general public that a registered practitioner adheres to high standards of competence and ethical practice.  All UK-SBA members, with the exception of Student members, appear on the UK-SBA Register. Therefore, anyone can search for UK-SBA members using the UK-SBA Register.

The UK-SBA Register follows all the principles and standards required by statutory and accreditation regulations and is the first step towards establishing an accredited register.

The UK-SBA Register is supported by Behaviour Analysts working independently and by those organisations that employ Behaviour Analysts in the UK.  The UK-SBA recognises the benefits that self-regulation followed by accreditation will bring in terms of protection and the safety and well being of users of Behaviour Analytic services.

The UK-SBA continues to work towards formal accreditation and recognition for Behaviour Analysts in the UK. This has been a major focus of our work since we were set up. You can read our position statement on accreditation here:
UK-SBA Position Statement on Accreditation.

Why the UK-SBA Register is important

Consumers and those who commission services can see your registration and see that in line with other professions you are governed by professional standards

  • The Register is a useful advertising tool for members and is a free service for consumers
  • By signing up to the Register consumers can be reassured that you are practising safely

By signing up and agreeing to self-regulation you are supporting other Behaviour Analysts in the UK and helping us obtain assured register status in line with other UK professions.

Register Requirements

Ethical Guidelines

All members are required to sign up to the UK-SBA Code of Ethical and Professional Conduct.

All members are required to sign up to the UK-SBA Complaints Procedure.

Legislation

All those who wish to register must comply with relevant legislation which impacts on their working practice. This includes:

Equality Act 2010

Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

General Data Protection Regulation 2018

Data Protection Act 1998

Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations amended May 2011

Freedom of Information Act 2000

Human Rights Act 1998

Mental Capacity Act 2005

Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006

Codex Alimentarius, established 1963

Data Protection

Practitioners must take into account the rights of clients and their own responsibilities under UK Data Protection legislation and other legal requirements.  This includes protecting information and data, including data held in a digital format. See Data Protection information:  http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/29/contents and the UK-SBA Data Protection and Privacy Policies.

Complaints Procedure

All registrants are asked to declare as part of the registering process that they commit to adhering to the UK-SBA Code of Ethical and Professional Conduct. The UK-SBA will expect members of the public to bring matters of unethical or poor practice to its attention. We will always encourage complainants to take the matter up with the practitioner or their organisation in the first instance.  Any complainant will be asked to show evidence that they have done this before the UK-SBA will accept the complaint. If a complaint is received the registrant will be notified and sent a copy of all documentation. The complaint will be dealt with according to the UK-SBA Complaints Procedure.

Safety to Practice Items

All UK-SBA registrant members must demonstrate a commitment to best practice and a commitment to the safety of the end user.  It is therefore mandatory that all those working or seeking work must hold suitable insured for their practice and those working with children and/or vulnerable adults must hold a disclosure and have completed relevant safeguarding training.  All UK-SBA registrant members must be able to present evidence of these items to the end-user when requested.  The UK-SBA encourages end-users to request to view these documents where relevant before agreeing employment.
These requirements are explained fully below:

Insurance

All registrant members  who are practising behaviour analysis in any capacity (voluntary, training, paid or unpaid) or who are seeking a role MUST hold current insurance to practice.

There are risks involved in the practice of Behaviour Analysis.  It is important that registrants have adequate insurance to cover these risks including professional liability insurance and public liability insurance (employer's liability may also apply if you employ other staff).  Usually your employer will be responsible for your insurance, but if you are an independent practitioner you will need to arrange your own insurance cover.  To go on the UK-SBA Register you will need to provide evidence of appropriate insurance.  If you are not currently employed but seeking employment you need to hold independent insurance to be able to join the UK-SBA.

Your insurance must be with a UK insurance provider.

If your insurance is under your employer and they cannot give you a copy of their insurance certificate, you should ask them to confirm you are insured by a letter and you may upload this letter a your evidence.   This should be on letter headed paper and should include the following:

  • Your name as it appears on your UK-SBA account
  • Your role title
  • Confirmation that you are employed by them
  • The date the insurance covers i.e. from and to
  • Confirmation you are insured under the company liability for employees
  • The full name of the person confirming this to be true
  • The full contact details for the person confirming this to be true
  • The full company contact details

If you are wanting to appear as available for work and/or offering supervision where you will be working under your current employer, then you should provide evidence that you are insured under your employer.

If you are wanting to appear as available for work and/or offering supervision where you will be working independent of your employer, you should provide evidence of your current personal insurance for the services you are offering.

If you need to arrange your own insurance and do not have a provider we advise you contact Everywhen, formerly Towergate Insurance, (https://www.everywhen.co.uk/business-insurance ) for advice on appropriate cover.  Everywhen offer free advice and guidance and are used to advising and insuring Behaviour Analysts in the UK.  You are not obliged to use Every when but they will provide you with a good benchmark to compare with other providers.  If you do contact Everywhen please mention you are UK-SBA member as they are used to advising our members.

Safeguarding and Disclosures

You have a professional duty to safeguard and protect children and vulnerable adults.  You must follow advice from professionals and regulatory bodies.  To join the UK-SBA Register practitioners who work with vulnerable populations and those who wish to appear as available for work and/or offering supervision MUST provide evidence on their account of  1) an up-to-date Disclosure and 2) evidence of Safeguarding training.

Disclosures

An Enhanced Disclosure is required for anybody who is working with children or vulnerable adults in the UK.  There are three providers for Disclosures across the UK:

Where a member is employed by an organisation and therefore has access to an Enhanced Disclosure this should always be supplied as supporting evidence rather than a Basic Disclosure.  We understand there are difficulties for independent, self-employed practitioners obtaining an Enhanced Disclosure if they cannot access an employer to apply for one on their behalf.  We are exploring alternative routes for our members with the authorities, as this is a clear anomaly in the system. But in the meantime if you are unable to obtain an Enhanced Disclosure please contact our Administrator for advice
[email protected] .

A third party disclosure cannot be accepted.  Only a disclosure issued by the relevant government bodies can be accepted i.e. the England and Wales Government Disclosure and Barring Service, the Scottish government body Disclosure Scotland or the Northern Ireland government body AccessNI.

You may upload a clear image of your paper disclosure or electronic disclosure to your account provided it is showing an issue date within 3 years of your UK-SBA registration start date.

If you have signed up to the electronic update service you may upload a clear screen grab of your full electronic summary provided you also upload the certificate cited on the electronic summary.  Your summary cannot be accepted without the cited certificate as your summary is purely an update since the original certificate was issued and only shows any updates and not the original disclosure details.

We advise those who have been issued a new Enhanced Disclosure to sign up to the electronic update service as this way you can maintain your enhanced disclosure yourself without the need of an employer.  Please note you would need to sign up to this within 30 days of your new Enhanced Disclosure being issued.  There is an annual fee charged by the awarding government body.  Please go to your relevant awarding government body for full details and information about this option.

Any Disclosure must be renewed every 3 years as this is considered best practice and therefore mandatory for membership to the UK-SBA.  If you are using your update service summary as your evidence, you should upload your renewed summary each time you renew your registration with the UK-SBA.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is a priority for best practice and as such, evidence of training appropriate for the population served is necessary for UK-SBA membership.  Any Safeguarding Training must be renewed every 3 years as this is considered best practice and therefore mandatory for membership to the UK-SBA.  Your safeguarding training must have been provided by a UK training provider.

There are a number of online safeguarding courses and it can be confusing to determine which course to choose.  First you should ensure you select one that is suitable for the population with whom you are working.  We have provided details below for the NSPCC.  You are not obliged to use the NSPCC but they are a reputable organisation who are established in delivering safeguarding training and so are a good first stop to understanding what a safeguarding course should include.

          • NSPCC Safeguarding training – If you work with children, the NSPCC offers an affordable online
            safeguarding course.
          • The NSPCC also sends out a free weekly current awareness newsletter with practice, policy and research updates to keep you up-to-date with all the latest safeguarding and child protection news.

Your safeguarding evidence should be the certificate you were issued with on completion of your training.  If you were not awarded a certificate you can upload a letter of confirmation from your training provider.  This should be on letter headed paper and must included the following information:

  • Your name as it appears on the UK-SBA register
  • The date you completed your training
  • The title of the course you completed with an overview of the course content
  • The full name of the person confirming this to be true
  • The full contact details for the person confirming this to be true
  • The full company contact details for the awarding body

If you only have confirmation of your training in the form of an electronic record of training we can accept a screengrab of this record but this must include the following:

  • Your name as it appears on the UK-SBA register
  • Your employer's name
  • The date you completed your training
  • The title of the course you completed (ideally with an overview of the course content)
  • The full company contact details for the awarding body if your training was not provided by your employer
